Inspiration comes in all forms

August 29, 2007

Many people like to keep music or the tv on while they work (or study). The background noise helps them concentrate. Others require absolute silence, for even the merest whisper can throw them off their game. I’ve come to the conclusion that I fall squarely in the former camp. However, it’s a little more complicated than just having some noise playing. Experience has shown me that it has to be something very specific.

When I was in school, I’d do homework while watching TV, and while I’d never admit it to my parents now, my concentration would go completely to shit. And listening to the radio would distract me because I’d be paying more attention to the song, especially if it was something I recognised. I needed something that only engaged my aural senses (which eliminated TV), but was something that wouldn’t take my attention from the task at hand.

Lo and behold, here is my solution. Scoff not, it actually works pretty well! There are two 20 second commercials every 20 minutes, which makes for a nice break. And while most people might not have the patience to listen to this stuff, the fact that the station only plays selected pieces from the most famous composers makes it a lot easier to have in the background.

Why am I mentioning this? Because writing essays for MBA applications is a real pain in the ass, and I approve of anything that makes me more efficient in completing this task. 🙂

I was right

Heavy rain and thunder. Driving back home will be great fun. 😛

Monsoon’s not over yet

August 27, 2007

After a few weeks of light(ish) rain, I think we’re about to get hit by a big one today. Looks like fun. 🙂

$hit happens

You know how when you do a certain task many times on a regular basis, you stop paying attention after a while and do it by remote control? And just when you’re not expecting it, something happens to remind you that you should really pay attention?

That’s the thought that ran through my mind when I scraped my car against the pillar of our building, while pulling out of the parking lot. *sigh*

Sky’s the limit!

I got an email about this, and looked it up online. I know at least the bottom two exist for real, but there is some debate about the ones above. Either way, it’s very funny. 🙂

How things change

Old Me

That was me approximately a decade ago. I can’t think of any other comments to make.

New Ways to Blog

August 25, 2007

I’m trying out a new add-on for Firefox, called Deepest Sender. It allows users to write a blog entry even when they’re offline. I simply fire the program up from within Firefox, type up my blog post, and save. Then, when I can connect to the server, I upload the post to WordPress.

Some of you might be wondering what the point is, if I can just go to the website when I do get online and post then. Well, that’s what usually happens when I get a good blog post idea. I think I’ll post it when I get home. But by then, I’m usually not as enthused about the particular topic anymore, and it becomes too much of an effort. This way, I can type it up and just upload as soon as I get home.

Of course, just because it’s easier, doesn’t mean I’ll actually do it very often. Time will tell, as it usually does.

Welcome, one and all, to my new home

August 23, 2007

This is my first post at my new location, and so far, it seems pretty nice. Interface is a little friendlier. Overall, I’m liking it a lot more than Xanga. If anyone else out there has a Xanga blog that they’d like to migrate over, let me know. I’d be glad to share my experience. 🙂

One other big change I’m going to institute in my blog-writing method is splitting up my posts. Till date, each post was a collection of thoughts on various topics. Instead, I’ll just split them up in to separate posts. If nothing else, it’ll make it easier for everyone (especially me) to find any previous posts. It’ll also make it easier for me psychologically to blog more frequently, since I won’t be waiting till I have enough “material” before I can put stuff online.

I might play with the overall theme and look, I don’t know yet. Depends on how much time I have, and more importantly, how much time I’m willing to spend.  Either way, I’m sure you’ll be among the first to notice. 🙂

That’s it for now. Might be back later. Be good, y’all.

Someone who agrees with me!

August 20, 2007

This is what I wrote last year. (Incidentally, Xanga has a God-awful interface for finding previous posts. Seriously. I’m starting to really hate this service.)

This is what I read today.

See? These shows are crap!

Chak de Phatte!

This link was too good not to share. I know it might be painful for some of you, but stick with it. When the guy himself starts speaking, it’s pretty funny. And yes, he really is Indian.
